Clementines
Born in Algeria around 1920 and owes its name to the director of an orphanage in the Oran region, Father Clément, who had the idea of crossing a mandarin tree with a sweet orange. The fruit thus created being a hybrid whose multiplication is obtained by grafting, this explains why the clementine is almost seedless.
It is mainly cultivated in Algeria, Morocco, and Spain. Clementine is a citrus fruit, fruit of the clementine tree (Citrus × clementina), a hybrid tree of the rutaceae family.
The propagation is mainly done by grafting, because the seedlings give hybrids far from the original variety. All clementine trees are therefore clones, but the appearance and selection of sports (mutations) have made it possible to obtain new varieties.
Its skin is thin, green-orange in color, non-adherent. Its juicy and tangy flesh is one of the softest and sweetest of citrus fruits. This fruit is therefore mainly consumed plain.
