The history of blood transfusion was revolutionized in 1900 when the Austrian Karl LANDSTEINER discovered the concept of different ABO blood groups, by comparing the blood of different subjects. It is in homage to his contribution to blood transfusion that the date of June 14, the day of his birth, was chosen by the World Health Organization to celebrate World Blood Donor Day and the first successful blood transfusion was carried out by Albert HUSTIN in 1914 in France and it was during the First World War that much progress was made.
In Algeria, the first organization of Blood Transfusion was carried out in 1968 by ordinance, then a succession of decisions led in 1995 to the creation of the National Blood Agency.
Algeria celebrates three days each year dedicated to blood donation:
The establishment in 2006 of October 25 as “National Blood Donor Day” and this in homage to the date of creation in 1976 of the Algerian Blood Donor Federation (FADS), also two other significant dates are June 14, “World Blood Donor Day” and March 30 for “Maghreb Blood Donor Day”.
Blood being a precious and irreplaceable liquid, its obtaining relies exclusively on the generosity of our fellow citizens because blood donation in Algeria is governed by three (03) major ethical principles of volunteerism, anonymity and absence of profit, in accordance with the recommendations of the World Health Organization in the interest of the recipient who will benefit from safe blood, and in sufficient quantity, without harming the blood donor.
Today, the demand for blood products is increasing year after year, given the ever-increasing needs in the various hospital departments.
In this context, the National Blood Agency is active in promoting blood donation in order to raise civil society awareness of the importance of blood donation because it is a source of life that can be shared, because everyone can one day find themselves in the situation of needing the blood of another.
Thus, in order to improve the health of patients or even save their lives, let us show solidarity by donating blood and save lives.
