National Day
International Mother Language Day was proclaimed by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November 1999, in honor of the Bengali people, and celebrated every year since February 21, 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity as well as multilingualism. Whatever is done to promote the spread of mother tongues will serve not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to increase awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions around the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.
Theme 2018 – “Preserving linguistic diversity in the world and promoting multilingualism to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”
On May 16, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution 61/266, “requested Member States and the Secretariat to encourage the conservation and defense of all languages spoken by people throughout the world.”
To promote sustainable development, learners must have access to education in their mother tongue and in other languages. It is through mastery of one's first or mother tongue that basic reading, writing and arithmetic skills can be acquired. Local languages, particularly the languages of minorities and indigenous peoples, transmit culture, values and traditional knowledge, thus playing an important role in promoting sustainable futures.
Algeria, being a member of the United Nations, is committed to the application of all conventions relating to the preservation and promotion of cultural and linguistic diversity and celebrates International Mother Language Day every year.
