Lejdar Tiaret Tombs
This designation suits the important historical monuments, located on the borders between the town of Frenda and the town of Madroussa 30km south of the wilaya of Tiaret. They represent a set of very old tombs and mausoleums built in the style of Egyptian pyramids belonging to Amazigh kings and personalities, during the period from the 4th to the 7th century. These tombs are thirteen (13) in number divided into two different groups, the first consists of 03 mausoleums which predominate the peaks of Mount Lakhdar, known as Jebel Lejdar. As for the second set, called Thernatin, it consists of 10 tombs supposed to be a real necropolis located downstream of Mount Araoui, approximately 2.5 km from Mount Lakhdar.
Regarding the origin of the name Ledjedars, some researchers believe that it derives from the word wall in Arabic and may indicate the thickness of these buildings and their durability. The monuments have been subject to destruction and squandering due to the nature of man, just like during the year 1961 during the Algerian revolution, where these tombs suffered artillery strikes by the French army.
After independence, Ledjedars were classified as national heritage on January 23, 1968 by the Algerian authorities.
