Biological diversity is an important resource for humans from which all kinds of pharmaceutical and industrial products are derived
It constitutes the basis of sustainable development and is the source of food and ecological security for future generations.
Biological diversity is essential for the economic and social development of humanity. As a result, there is a growing recognition that biological diversity is a universal asset, of inestimable value to present and future generations. At the same time, to this day, the threats to species and ecosystems have never been greater. The extinction of species due to human activities is occurring at an alarming rate.
The convention entered into force on December 29, 1993. The first session of the conference of the parties took place from November 28 to December 9, 1994 in the Bahamas. It has three main objectives.
Conservation of biological diversity
Sustainable use of components of biological diversity
Fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources.
This year, the theme of the day: “celebrating 25 years of action for biodiversity”. The theme was chosen to mark the 25th anniversary of the entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity and to highlight the progress made in achieving its objectives at national and global levels.
Like every year and like the international community, Algeria celebrates May 22 as the International Day of Biological Diversity by organizing a series of events. This celebration aims to strengthen the awareness of the various stakeholders of the importance of preserving ecological and biological heritage which is increasingly exposed to various forms of pressure which risks compromising the services it provides and the benefits it generates for the populations.
The implementation of the strategic plan of the convention on biological diversity (2011-2020) and in particular its objective which consists of achieving a reduction in the current rate of loss of biological diversity at the national level, the strategy and the national action plan for biodiversity 2016-2030 were developed and validated on October 10, 2016.
This new strategy made it possible to have a global vision of biodiversity in Algeria and to set coherent and achievable objectives.
It is structured around four strategic orientations divided into 21 national objectives and 113 actions.
Adaptation of the institutional, strategic and legislative framework.
Development, sharing and valorization of knowledge for inclusive sustainable development.
Conservation and restoration of Algerian natural capital.
Valorization of biodiversity for the green economy.
