Real name Mohamed El-Amdjed Ben Abdelmalek, Chérif Boubaghla, known by the nickname “Boubaghla” (the man with the mule), coming from western Algeria settled in Sour el Ghozlane in 1849.
At a young age, he worked as a teacher in a Koranic school, which, at the same time, treated the sick and encouraged them to join the resistance against the colonizer.
In 1851, the French became aware of the instigating activities of Chérif Boubaghla and ordered his arrest, accusing him of subversion and incitement to rebellion. He managed to escape to take refuge in Kalaâ Beni Abbas then joined the Melikeuch tribe on February 24, 1851 where he established it as a rear base for his revolt against the French occupation. He won his first military victory against the French forces commanded by the officer Beauprêtre governor of Béni Mansour on March 2, 1851. From March 24 to April 4, 1851, he successfully increased his attacks against the enemy, he also tried to extend his revolt in the different regions of the country through a group of messengers whom he charged with carrying out propaganda in Médéa, El-Asnam, Miliana…etc.
In August 1851, he launched the revolt in Kabylia which he extended after the accession of Lalla Fatma N'soumer.
Boubaghla devoted himself completely to his revolt against French colonialism and to the defense of the Djurdjura region. He died as a martyr on December 24, 1854, decapitated, his head was displayed as a trophy on a post in the center of the town of Bordj-Bou-Arréridj.
