SHEIKH AMOUD BEN EL-MOKHTAR 1859-1929
Sheikh Amoud Ben El-Mokhtar was born in 1859 within the Imanane tribe (Sakiet El Hamra), he received his first education in Djanet where he learned the Koran and mastered the theological sciences of knowledge and the Arabic language.
Cheikh Amoud led Targuie resistance against French penetration into the Sahara, the first contact of which was in 1881 during the Battle of Bir El Gharama, which resulted in the death of the leader of the French expedition, Commander Flatters, after being hit by Cheikh Amoud, who caused the French colonial army to suffer numerous defeats in various battles such as:
* Battle of Illizi; 1904.
* Battle of Isseyen; 1913.
* Battle of In Imjen; 1816.
