The pages of religious and cultural history in Algeria are highlighted by a precious chain made up of scientific, cultural and religious institutions with deep ancestral roots. These have contributed significantly to the development of society, its evolution and the building of its illustrious civilization. It is therefore completely fair and objective to affirm that the milestones connecting the elements of this chain are the zaouïas, ribats and Marabouts, and that they are also real places disseminating knowledge and education throughout all the regions of the country where they are established.
The Zaouïas have played and continue to play an avant-garde role in the service of the holy Koran: they are ancient schools which ensure the teaching, memorization and exegesis of the holy book. A large place is also given to the study of the tradition of the prophet of Islam, peace and blessings be upon him, in order to make his person known and perpetuate his holy words, on the one hand.
On the other hand, the zaouïas contribute to the service of knowledge: thanks to them, eminent scholars have been born, imams have received the best religious training and students and faithful disciples have found adequate supervision. The contribution of these institutions in terms of books, works and research for Islamic libraries is indisputable, in more than one way.
The zaouïas are a reference: when a person goes to a zaouïa to receive training, this means that they are seeking to rise to a level of improvement. This institution fought the splits and divisions within society and made it possible to preserve the social fabric and spread the culture of mutual aid and solidarity among the subjects of the same nation.
The zaouïas are prestigious spaces dedicated to the dissemination of religious values put at the service of the Nation. As such, they paid a heavy price and sacrificed human lives whose unwavering will made it possible to liberate the homeland from colonialism and put an end to oppression. Through continued struggle, they have inscribed their contributions on the pages of history, from the initial popular resistance against the French occupation to the glorious Algerian revolution that led the country to independence.
Today: they still constitute a shield against all deviations from the national religious reference. Thanks to the doctrine taught by its schools and their jurisprudence, they are more than ever attached to moderate Islam and strengthened in such a way as to teach the values of tolerance and living together and protect society against anything that can lead it to violent extremism, blind radicalism as well as all forms of intellectual excesses and deviations of all kinds.
