Having regard to the place of the information sector in the promotion of man, the defense of the foundations of society and the contribution to overall development, his excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. ABDELAZIZ BOUTEFLIKA, decided to decree October 22 national press day, by presidential decree n° 13-191 of May 19, 2013, in homage to the publication, on October 22, 1955, of the first issue of the newspaper El-Mouqawama El-Djazairia (The Algerian Resistance), organ of the National Liberation Front (FLN) and the National Liberation Army (ALN).
The reference to this date refers to strong symbolism with regard to the fundamental role accomplished by the first generation of Algerian writers, intellectuals, journalists and media professionals, in the recovery of national sovereignty and despoiled freedom. In the same militant spirit and the same determination full of self-sacrifice, the new generation has raised the torch high, thus perpetuating the noble mission in the sense of the assortment of the development of the independent Algerian State.
National Press Day pays tribute to press professionals who contribute professionally to the progress and prosperity of the nation.
Algeria and the media community celebrate this day each year by organizing several commemorative activities. The most prestigious event of this day is the Prize of the President of the Republic, of the Professional Journalist, established by presidential decree No. 15-133 of 02 Chaabane 1436 corresponding to May 21, 2015, with the aim of crowning the best journalistic works, in radio, television, written and electronic press, as well as photography, illustration and caricature.
This prize, awarded annually, constitutes a symbol of offering press professionals the opportunity to highlight their creative potential, and to establish a culture of healthy competition.
