The Alcomsat-1 project is part of the National Space Program PSN - horizon 2020, it aims to strengthen national sovereignty in telecommunications, through:
- The establishment of an appropriate, efficient and secure transmission network;
- The continuity of operation of telecommunications services in the event of major disasters;
- Increasing the capacity of the national telecommunications network;
- The relocation of activities and services concentrated in the North thanks to an optimized telecommunications network;
- Reduction of current operating costs linked to the use of space capacity provided by international telecommunications systems;
- Technology and know-how transfer.
The successful launch of the Algerian Telecommunications satellite Alcomsat-1 took place on December 11, 2017 at 12:40 a.m. This operation was carried out by the Chinese LongMarch-3B (LM-3B) launcher from the Xichang launch base, located in the Sichuan province 2,200 km southwest of Beijing.
Five propulsion maneuvers of the Alcomsat-1 satellite in six days were necessary to reach its geostationary orbit of 36,000 km and its orbital position of 24.8° West.
The satellite has returned to its operational phase after the stationing and in-orbit testing phases. Operation and control of the satellite are carried out by engineers from the Algerian Space Agency from the telecommunications systems operating centers in Bouchaoui (Algiers) and Boughezoul (Médéa).
Alcomsat-1 is a valuable multi-mission tool that provides national and regional coverage (North Africa and the Sahel).
It allows the improvement of telecommunications and the reception of several television broadcast programs. It also provides audio transmission and high-speed internet services and allows the implementation of tele-teaching, telemedicine, videoconferencing applications, etc.
