This happened on the morning of March 8, 1974, when the plane took off from Hanoi international airport in Vietnam, heading towards a military airport, about sixty kilometers from the capital, in the SOC SON district, as the crow flies.
As he began the landing maneuver and the plane was a few meters above the ground, the pilot realized that the runway was too short. He then tried to give the engines the necessary momentum to regain altitude but as the aircraft was flying very low and had already hit the branches of the trees, the situation became uncontrollable and the plane was crushed in flames, a few meters further on.
Fifteen journalists representing the Algerian delegation and accompanying the President of the Republic, Houari Boumediene, during his tour in Asia, were all killed during this tragedy.
There were also nine Vietnamese journalists on board this plane in addition to the crew. There were no survivors. The tragedy thus struck both Algeria and Vietnam and mourned the entire media corporation.
In the week following the repatriation of the victims of the crash, a solemn ceremony took place in the lounge of honor at Algiers airport, in the presence of President Houari Boumediene and members of the government and the Revolutionary Council, to support the families of the victims of this tragedy and salute one last time these courageous and valiant men who had perished while fulfilling their duty in the service of Algeria.
Another grieving family - the press, radio, television and APS family - was also present to pay tribute to their elite colleagues who died while fulfilling their duties.
A national funeral was organized in Algiers in honor of the victims of duty and a stele, erected in their memory in 2000, still stands in the Vietnamese capital, while in 2013, an avenue was named in their name in Algiers, in the Saïd-Hamdine district.
The stele and the name of the avenue commemorate the names of the victims and give their sacrifice its historical value: Saleh Dib, Abderrahman Kahwadji, Mahmoud Midat, Mustapha Kaboub, Abdelkader Bouhmia, Mouhamed Bekai, Laaredj Boutrif, Rabah Haned, Sebti Mouaki, Ahmed Abdelatif, Mohamed Taleb, Mohamed Sahraoui, Tayeb Harket, Djilali Djedar and Mohamed Attalah
