Emiliano Zapata
In 1910, Emiliano Zapata joined Francisco Madero's revolutionary movement, defending the middle class, fighting against the dictator Porfirio Díaz to obtain land restitution and true Agrarian Reform. In 1911, Zapata took charge of the revolutionary movement in the southern region after Madero seized power.
In April 1919, Colonel Jesús Guajardo plotted an ambush against Zapata. To gain Zapata's trust, he feigned sympathy for him and attacked a column of federal soldiers (his own men), killing 57. He thus obtained to speak to him about his rallying, promising him men, rifles and artillery. They made an appointment at the San Juan Chinameca hacienda, Zapata fell into the trap where armed men were waiting for him there and he was shot at point blank range.
After his death, his influence remained significant in the revolutionary movements of the South. This is how the Zapatista National Liberation Army decided in 1990 to defend the rights of the indigenous people of Chiapas.
A commemorative stele bearing his bust was erected in his honor in the center of Fernane-Hanafi road at Hussein Dey – Algiers place which will now bear the name of Place Emiliano Zapata.
