World Organ Donation and Transplantation Day
ADOPTION OF A WORLD DAY OF ORGAN DONATION AND TRANSPLANTATION BY THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION:
Since 2005, members of the World Health Organization have celebrated World Organ Donation and Transplantation Day, which is held every year on October 17.
The celebration of this day reminds us that thanks to donation and human generosity, associated with medical innovation, this therapy gives patients hope and life.
Over the last fifty years, organ transplants have spread throughout the world, contributing to the preservation of human beings. And help others to have better health and allow them to live in better conditions.
THE OBJECTIVES OF CELEBRATING WORLD ORGAN DONATION AND TRANSPLANT DAY:
• Raise public awareness of the need for organ donation and encourage debate and information among the general public on issues related to organ donation, harvesting and transplantation.
• The popularization of organ donation, in order to limit hesitation about transplants.
• Pay tribute to organ donors and encourage more people to donate their organs in their lives.
• inform health professionals, associations and the general public about legal and medical measures and encourage everyone to define their position on organ and tissue donation and make it known to their loved ones.
• ALGERIAN CONTEXT: THE NATIONAL TRANSPLANT AGENCY “ANG” NATIONAL COORDINATING INSTITUTION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF TRANSPLANT ACTIVITIES:
The National Transplant Agency is an institution, under the supervision of the Ministry of Health, Population and Hospital Reform, Created under Executive Decree 12-167 of April 5, 2012, it is responsible for coordinating, developing and promoting activities of donation and removal of organs, tissues and cells and ensuring their regularity and safety and ensuring the application of scientific decisions and recommendations and ethics in matters of organ harvesting and transplantation. And develop training and research cooperation with similar bodies abroad.
The ANG has fully invested thanks to the work carried out by health professionals and the contribution of patient associations and learned societies, for the promotion of organ donation, tissue, and the development of harvesting and transplantation, the results of which are improving from one year to another, and citizen mobilization is expanding more and more.
Like the members of the World Health Organization, Algeria celebrates the World Organ Donation and Transplant Day every year, as such the National Transplant Agency, in collaboration with patient associations and learned societies, by organizing a rich and varied program of awareness days in order to:
- Reaffirm the commitment of all stakeholders to the promotion of donation and transplantation, as a lasting action to meet the strong demand from patients awaiting transplants.
- Remind the ethical principles and bioethical rules, the technical medical conditions of donation and transplantations.
- Transmit on this occasion strong messages calling for society's support for this noble cause of public health.
