Bats - Myotis Nattereri
Bats, more commonly called “bats” or in Arabic khefach, tyrellil, contain 26 species in Algeria from 7 different families.
The majority of our bats frequent environments ranging from the coast to the mountains, forest areas and around ten of them live in steppe and Saharan environments. Cave-dwellers, they live in caves, scree, ruins, wells, cracks, mines, tunnels.
The Natterer's Bat is a species of bat in the Vespertilionidae family, is nocturnal and crepuscular. Medium size, fairly long ears measuring between 14-18 mm, slightly exceeding the muzzle, its coat is long and ruffled, gray-brown on the back, and gray-white on the belly.
Lives in colonies, emits ultrasounds that characterize each species and uses echolocation to navigate in total darkness.
Known from the limit of the Sahel coast and the Tell Atlas going from the central North to the West of the country, Frequenting forest habitats and occupying plain landscapes with populations of oaks and riverine forests, reproduction and birthing takes place in caves, mines, hollow trees, etc.
All our bats are insectivores protected by Executive Decree No. 12-235 of May 24, 2012 establishing the list of protected non-domestic animal species.
