Like the countries of the Mediterranean, Algeria is characterized by its cultural and historical diversity which is essentially linked to the different civilizations that have succeeded one another in the region.
Among the largest and most popular traditional industries in Algeria is the making of ornaments and jewelry. These jewels which vary from North to South and from East to West, in terms of designs, formats and type of metal used.
Chemassa (the loop):
Its name is taken from its shape which corresponds to the shape of the sun. It is a circle with pointed edges which represent the light coming from the sun. It is also known as “Ibzim” (the loop) in many regions of the country. The “Chemassa” is a brooch that is placed in the necklace. It is made of precious metal which is either gold or silver. It is one of the best-known traditional Algerian jewelry, just like the “Skhab”. Moreover, they are both considered traditional Algerian jewelry par excellence. The Chemassa (loop) is an important part of the necklace, widely known in various regions of Algeria such as Tlemcen, Annaba, Batna and central Algiers. It varies in its forms and method of manufacture from one region of the country to another.
