Olympic Games - Tokyo 2020
The 32nd edition of the 2020 Summer Olympics is the second Summer Games hosted by Tokyo, Japan, after those in 1964.
Initially scheduled for July 24 to August 9, 2020, the Olympic Games must be held from July 23 to August 8, 2021.
On March 24, 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Prime Minister of Japan Shinzō ABE requested the postponement of the Games for one year, i.e. in 2021, immediately ratified by the International Olympic Committee IOC.
The name of the Games will remain unchanged: “Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games”. The 1916, 1940 and 1944 Games were canceled during both world wars, but this is the first time they have been postponed.
The events are to be held in several Japanese cities, mainly in Tokyo, in the “Heritage Zone”, several of which have already been used for the 1964 Games, and the “Tokyo Bay Zone”, which symbolizes the future of the city.
The official logo of the Games was unveiled to the Japanese public at the end of April 2016. It represents an indigo-colored checkerboard circle following the Ichimatsu MOYO pattern. This logo was chosen following a national competition won by Japanese artist Asao TOKORO. According to the latter, each rectangle of the logo represents a country participating in the Games.
The Tokyo Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games announced on December 7, 2017 the pre-selection of three pairs of mascots for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, among the 2,042 proposals received.
The final choice is given to Japanese primary school students through an open vote from December 11, 2017 to February 22, 2018. International schools in Japan and overseas Japanese schools can also vote.
The pair of winning mascots, named Miraitowa and Someity, were revealed on February 28, 2018. Created by Ryo TANIGUCHI, an illustrator from Fukuoka, they obtained 53% of the votes from the 205,755 classes who participated in the selection.
