Algerian-Tunisian relations are of a very particular and exceptional quality. They are characterized by the deep bonds of fraternity and friendship between the two countries. Tunisia always supported Algeria during its War of Liberation and it was the first country to adopt the Treaty of Fraternity and Concord with Algeria, in 1983. The people of the two states are only one people, united by the same religion, the common history and the same geographical affiliation.
Between the banks of the “Oued Medjerda” valley flows a river whose source is located in the Souk-Ahras region, in eastern Algeria. “Oued Medjerda” flows into the Gulf of Tunis in the Mediterranean Sea. More than 450 kilometers long, a large part of this valley is located inside Tunisian territory. Along its route, one of the largest dams in Tunisia was erected, namely the “Sidi Salem” dam.
The name of the valley is derived from the Greek word "Bograda" which designated this valley for hundreds of years, where many cities were founded throughout history, thanks to the abundance of water and the fertility of the soil, like the cities of "Ghar al-Dima", "Jendouba", "Bou Salem", Testour", "Medjez elBab", "Tebourba", and "Djedeida".
After the first joint Algerian-Tunisian philatelic issue which took place in 2008 and which was dedicated to the commemoration of the “50th anniversary of Sakiet Sidi Youcef” and in a second initiative, Algérie Poste, in collaboration with the services of the Tunisian Postal Administration, intends to issue a new joint commemorative postage stamp this time dedicated to “Oued Medjerda”.
This philatelic issue is intended to be one more event to add to the balance sheet of the good diplomatic and geographical relations which unite the two countries, already linked by a common destiny. The marketing of said common postage stamp will be done jointly by Algeria and Tunisia, to the great delight of philatelists from both countries.
