The Algerian traditional saddle industry constitutes a popular heritage strongly linked to horse riding and fantasia shows, during which riders compete in the choice of the most decorated saddlery and the most elegant models.
Our grandfathers ensured that this heritage was passed down and preserved from generation to generation. Traditional saddlery has experienced a decline following the significant changes that have affected the social, economic and cultural life of society in many regions of the country. But Algerians have always safeguarded and preserved this traditional heritage.
The components of the saddle:
The saddle consists of a high arched part at the rear of the "seat" called the "cantle" and another lower part on the front called the "pommel", with a wool "pad" covered on the outside with leather, and with a number of leather straps connected to secure the body of the mare on the chest and abdomen side. Two stirrup leathers are also attached to the saddle with, at their ends, stirrups where the knight rests his feet. Between the saddle and the horse's back there is the "cloth" and the "carpet" which are sometimes cotton fabrics.
Types of stools:
- The superior quality saddle, engraved in silver;
- The saddle engraved in silver, size 10cm and 12 cm;
- The integrated saddle engraved in copper;
- The half-worked saddle, engraved in silver;
The saddlery industry is widespread in several regions of Algeria and is well-known in the wilaya of Tiaret, Tlemcen, Ain Temouchent, etc.
