National Day of Memory
May 8, 1945 is a key date which marks in history the end of a devastating war. It is the war that was won by the Allied States against Nazism. But in Algeria, the same date of May 8, 1945 relates one of the most heinous massacres carried out by the forces of the occupier against the Algerian people.
In fact, it is indeed a genocide which caused the death of 45 thousand Martyrs, who took to the streets to celebrate the defeat of Nazism and remind France of the need to honor its promises of freedom and independence for Algeria.
This is the date of a massacre perpetrated by colonial France in Algeria and which will remain forever marked in the memory of Algerians. May 8, 1945 is celebrated every year in Algeria and is intended to be a reminder and a memory for generations to never forget the horror of French colonialism, engraved in consciences.
The massacres of May 8, 1945 deeply affected the memory of the Algerian Nation. Each time, as this anniversary date approaches, we remember the atrocities and terrors committed against the Algerian people, and against humanity in general. These massacres are considered war crimes and the date of commemoration of their occurrence was proclaimed by the Algerian State “National Day of Memory”, to be celebrated annually.
