Training in the trades
The profession of sewing fishing nets is considered one of the professions accompanying the profession of sea fishing since ancient times. In Algeria, fishermen generally practice it according to each type of fishing boat.
Some of the elderly fishermen who have lost the physical ability to cope with the sea waves specialize in tailoring. Nets have been present in the family environment since antiquity and according to the needs of the trade, such as what is found in the governorates of Tipasa, Bejaia and Jijel, which are known for organizing training courses for them by the sector.
After each fishing operation at sea, the tailors come together to repair the damage caused to their nets during the fishing trip due to the fishing process by the force of traction or tension on the nets or the presence of rocks or strong fish which damage the nets.
Pliers and a needle for spinning the fillets are all requirements of the process. Clamps can be made manually. It is a wood the size of a pencil. It is split from its edges and the wire is wrapped around it to make squares of wire, woven together into a regular, uniform geometric shape.
When spinning, precision is taken into account. The distances between the eyes of the nets and the sizes of the lengths of the starts and ends of the net, which are fixed from cork and lead ropes, are equal to ensure the relaxation of the net so that it is easy for the fish to enter freely.
The activity of sewing fishing nets is seen as an inherited and essential activity for the good conduct of fishing in Algeria due to the role of net seamstresses in the permanence of the production cycle, as well as their importance in ports making it possible to perpetuate the activity in ports and fishing shelters.
