National Day
The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune decided to declare September 15 National Imam Day, in a message read on his behalf by the Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments Youcef Belmehdi, on the occasion of the 19th national conference dedicated to the memory of the scholar Sheikh Sidi Mohamed Belkebir, detained in the province of Adrar, entitled "The Imam, a religious message and a national value".

The message praised the scientific, cultural and social roles of imams (minbar guards) who honestly embodied the meaning of nationality, as they took it upon themselves to contribute to education in order to achieve the sense of law, justice, security and reform.

This day is celebrated throughout the country in various religious events and activities in recognition of the status of the Imam and his scientific, cultural and social role in consolidating religious baselines and strengthening national identity.

This day coincided with the anniversary of the death of the scholar Sheikh Sidi Mohamed Belkebir.

Who is Cheikh Sidi Mohamed Belkebir?

He is a Maliki Sufi scholar and Islamic jurist (Fakih). His lineage goes back to our Master Uthman ben Affan (may Allah bless him), born in 1911 in Ghamara, province of Adrar where he memorized the Quran and received the scientific principles of Sharia. Sheikh Mohamed Belkebir then moved to Tamantit to learn the best of the works and masterpieces of Islamic jurisprudence (Fikh) at the Maliki school as well as Arabic language and grammar. After that, he went to Tlemcen to ask for spiritual virtue from its famous scholar Sidi Boufelja ben Abderrahmane, then to the mosque of al Qarawiyyin in Fez where he spent 4 years and had a few reviews with his scholars.

Sheikh Belkebir returned to Timimoune and founded a school run by one of his students, then he returned to Adrar and founded a Quranic school in 1950, he also worked on its development until it became famous at home and abroad.

The Algerian university awarded him an honorary doctorate in recognition of his scientific and educational efforts, and he received the Order of the Republic in recognition of his high esteem and eminent status.

After a blessed life, Cheikh Sidi Mohamed Belkebir died on Friday September 15, 2000.

Definition of Madrasa (Quranic school):

Sheikh Belkebir chose the Madrasa - as an ideology and thought - to be a fortress to combat the ignorance, superstitions and segregation that colonization strove to spread in society. After independence, the Madrasa became a source of enlightenment with more than 20,000 graduates who memorized the Koran and Imams (Guardians of the Minbars) who traveled the country to disseminate, promote and maintain the national religious reference.

May Allah rest his soul and bless him.
