Head with a melon with marked convexity, a beak slightly shorter than in D. delphis, and the vent located at eye level. At birth 0.8 to 1 m; adults 1.7 to 2.1 m, exceptionally 2.7 m.
A very widely distributed species in the warm and temperate waters of the Atlantic and Pacific, the most common dolphin in the Mediterranean excluding the northern Adriatic. Flocks of more than 50 individuals are common, especially in summer off the coast of Annaba, Jijel, Algiers, Habibas Islands, Oran and Ghazaouet. Swims very fast, reaching 45 to 50 km/h. Longevity estimated at 20 years. Diet varies depending on the areas frequented, with predominance of cephalopods in the Mediterranean.
