Very difficult to distinguish from Stenella coeruleoalba, especially from a distance. Short duration dive, maximum depth 70 m; on the surface, breathes frequently and very briefly (1/3 of a second). Frequently jumps out of the water and rolls in the bow wave of boats.

At birth 0.8 to 0.95 m; adults 1.5 to 2.2 m, exceptionally 2.6 m.

Most widespread species in the warm and temperate waters of all oceans, but seems to be in decline in the Mediterranean in favor of S coeruleoalba. D. delphis appears more sensitive to chemical and acoustic pollution. Large herds are still present, particularly in Cap Rosa (Gulf of Annaba), Cap de Fer (Gulf of Skikda), Ténès and Cap Carbon (Gulf of Arzew). They are generally found in groups of 10 to 50 individuals, also in pairs or alone.

Swims very fast, reaching over 50 km/h. Highly developed maternal instinct. Longevity estimated at 25 or 30 years. It feeds mainly on fish (anchovies, sardines) and some cephalopods (squid, cuttlefish).
