Diplomatic relations between Algeria and Cuba were established on October 17, 1962. Since then, the two countries have maintained close, cordial relations marked by solidarity and cooperation both bilaterally and multilaterally.

Algeria and Cuba constantly advocate for the ideals that animated the Non-Aligned movement, whether within the UN and its branches or at the level of other forums.

The two countries maintain a regular exchange of high-level visits, as well as a tradition of consultation between officials of the two countries, on the sidelines of international forums.

A multitude of texts governing cooperation between the two countries have been signed since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the most important of which are:

- Agreement establishing the Joint Commission, signed in Algiers, on 06/1/1979;

- Memorandum of understanding (MoU) relating to political consultations, signed in Algiers, on 05/20/2007;

- Framework agreement relating to cooperation in the field of health, signed in Algiers, on 05/10/2016;

- Convention relating to the modalities of implementation of cooperation in the field of health, signed in Havana, on 01/30/2018.

Cooperation between the two countries is also governed by several Agreements signed in different areas of cooperation (health, agriculture, water resources, higher education, etc.). It is implemented through three institutional mechanisms: 1) the Joint Commission, whose last session (22nd) took place in Algiers, from February 19 to 21, 2019; 2) the political consultation mechanism between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries, which held its 3rd session on October 19, 2014; and 3) the Algerian-Cuban Business Council established between the CACI and the Cuban Chamber of Commerce in April 2018. It held its 2nd session in June 2022 on the occasion of the holding of the 53rd edition of the Algiers International Fair.

Bilateral cooperation mainly concerns the field of health, initiated following the independence of Algeria which received the first Cuban medical brigade in May 1963. In this context, four ophthalmological clinics were installed in Djelfa, El Oued, Bechar and Ouargla. This cooperation also includes maternal and child health, oncology and urology.

Cuban health personnel currently work in 47 health establishments in 18 wilayas, particularly in the south of the country. The health authorities of our country and the populations of the localities benefiting from Cuban medical services are satisfied with the services of the Cuban medical teams.
