7th edition of the African Nations Football Championship CHAN Algeria 2022
The Algerian Football Federation presented its candidacy and won, in 2018, the organization of the 7th edition of the African Nations Championship, branded CHAN TotalEnergies – Algeria 2022.
Postponed to January 2023 (from January 13 to February 4) due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the CHAN, under the slogan of Marhaba, allows Algeria to return to the organization of major football events, after the 1990 African Cup of Nations.
Four cities and four stadiums have been selected for this event which, for the first time, will host 18 selections instead of 16. These are Algeria, Libya, Ethiopia and Mozambique who will play in Algiers, at the brand new stadium named Nelson Mandela; from DR Congo, Uganda, Ivory Coast and Senegal who will be domiciled in Annaba and its completely renovated enclosure from May 19, 1956; the city of Constantine and its Chahid Hamlaoui stadium will host group C made up of Morocco, Sudan, Madagascar and Ghana; while the western capital, Oran, and its Miloud Hadefi Olympic Stadium, will be the stronghold of two groups of three: Mali, Angola and Mauritania (group D) and Cameroon, Congo and Niger (group E).
As a reminder, the CHAN, dedicated to the selections of local players playing in Africa, has already been organized by Ivory Coast (2009), Sudan (2011), South Africa (2014), Rwanda (2016), Morocco (2018) and Cameroon (2020, but organized in 2021).
This increasingly tough competition has so far seen four winners: DR Congo (2009 and 2016), Morocco (2018 and 2020), Tunisia (2012) and Libya (2014).
By investing heavily in modern and basic sports infrastructures, notably hotels, transport and services, Algeria aims to host other major events in the future, notably the CAN TotalEnergies 2025 for which it has officially submitted its candidacy.
