The Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States (PUIC) was created on June 17, 1999 in Tehran (Islamic Republic of Iran); Algeria joined the PUIC on the same day and is one of its founding members.

The PUIC now has 54 member parliaments and 22 observers.

PUIC organs

1.The Conference:

The Conference holds its meetings once a year, it includes the Presidents of the Member Parliaments of the Union or their representatives, and a maximum of four parliamentarians for each member of the Union.

2.The General Committee:

The General Committee meets once a year and is composed of two members for each PUIC member delegation.

3.The Standing Committees:

The PUIC has four permanent committees and each committee meets at least once a year:

1. Political Affairs and External Relations Committee.

2. Committee on Economic Affairs and the Environment.

3. Committee on Human Rights, Women and Family Affairs.

4. Committee on Cultural, Legal Affairs and Dialogue of Civilizations and Religions.

The Union established other committees such as the Permanent Palestine Committee.

The Committee of Muslim Communities and Minorities, created in May 2021, subsidiary of the Committee on Political Affairs and External Relations.

The Conference of Muslim Women Parliamentarians is held once a year on the sidelines of the PUIC Annual Conference.

4.The Executive Committee:

The Executive Committee is made up of 15 members (for a one-year term) and meets twice a year.

5.The General Secretariat:

H. E. Mr. Mohamed Khouraichi Niass, from Senegal, is re-elected Secretary General of the PUIC in December 2021;

H. E. Ambassador Ali Asghar Mohammadi Sijani of Iran is re-elected Deputy Secretary General in August 2022.

The headquarters of the PUIC General Secretariat is in Tehran (Islamic Republic of Iran).

The Algerian Parliament is represented in the PUIC by 6 permanent members.
