Algerian pharmaceutical industry: innovation and progress
Through more than 200 factories and laboratories spread across its territory, Algeria aims to achieve self-sufficiency in medicines, with the great ambition of penetrating the African market. In just a few decades, the country has managed to position itself as one of the leaders in pharmaceutical production in Africa, marking significant advances such as the production of the Algerian vaccine against COVID-19, the announcement of the local production of insulin as well as the launch of production units for anticancer drugs, thus contributing to reducing the import bill and creating added value for the national economy.
Indeed, in recent years, Algeria has made significant progress in building capacity in research, development and innovation in the pharmaceutical industry since it has modern infrastructure such as research laboratories and specialized institutes, which play a crucial role in the development of drugs and medical solutions. In addition, the efforts made by public authorities to encourage scientific and technological research have contributed to the creation of an ecosystem conducive to research, development and innovation in the pharmaceutical sector. Furthermore, Algeria relies on a community of researchers working on innovative projects, as well as collaboration between universities, research institutions and the pharmaceutical industry, which further strengthens national capacities. Thus, Algeria aspires to become a major player in the field of pharmaceutical innovation, not only to meet local demand, but also to contribute to global advances in health.
It should be noted that Algeria aims to cover around 70% of the national medicines market through local production by the end of 2024 and with the aim of improving the rate of integration of local production, a specific action plan has been put in place to strengthen the production of local inputs and establish an industrial base for subcontractors, in order to support production activities. The strategic reforms introduced in this sector have made it possible to increase the value of national production, thus demonstrating Algeria's progress in ensuring its health security by reducing imports and strengthening local production.
