The Barbary Hartebeest under the scientific name of “ALCELAPHUS BUSELAPHUS” or the vernacular name of Begr el wahch, Begr el Ahmar or Begr lekh’la.

It appears to be the smallest in size compared to the other subspecies of hartebeest still living in Africa. Its color varies depending on the subspecies (dark brown, ocher or red) it has a narrow and elongated head, the striped horns, the legs are long and built for running.

The hartebeest was present in antiquity throughout North Africa, in prehistoric times where it appears on numerous rock engravings in the Saharan atlas and the Tassili. It is also described and presented in the Roman mosaics. The part of the highlands and the semi-arid steppes included was the typical biotope (Mechria and Djbel Aissa in Ain Sefra) wilaya of Naâma.

This species, extinct in Algeria between (1935-1936), lived in the Algerian-Moroccan borders.
