The Casbah of Bejaia
The Casbah of Bejaia was classified as a National archaeological monument in 1903 and its classification was published in the Official Journal No. 07 of January 23, 1968. The Casbah of Bejaia is one of the largest historical monuments in the wilaya of Bejaia in terms of surface area. It was built in the Middle Ages, during the Almohad era in the middle of the 12th century, during the period which saw the reign of Sultan Abd el-Mumin Ben Ali.
The Casbah of Bejaia played an important role in the dissemination of science and knowledge in the Middle Ages, since it saw the influx of great scholars like the Andalusian metaphysician Ibn El Arabi, the Italian mathematician Leonardo Fibonacci, the Catalan philosopher Ramon Lol, the pioneer in sociology and historian Ibn Khaldoun, the Sicilian poet Ibn Hamdis, in addition to religious figures such as Sidi Boumediène, Sidi Bou Said, Sidi Abd al-Rahman al-Thaalibi, the traveler El Idrissi and El Hassan El Wazzan known as Leo the African.
