The Habibas Islands - Oran
The Habibas Islands are the first marine nature reserve on the Algerian coast. They form an archipelago made up of two main islands and another group of rocks and islands which are located 9.8 km from the coast, off Madagh beach in the commune of Ain El Karma to the west of Oran.
The most important of these islands and the largest is called the island of Thurya. It measures 1200 meters long and 160 to 600 meters wide. The highest peak is located in the southwest of the island at an altitude of 103 meters above sea level and is dominated by a lighthouse. The Habibas Islands are considered the lungs of the Mediterranean because it is a unique environmental space and a shelter for thousands of birds.
As of March 29, 2003, under Executive Decree No. 03-147, this site was officially classified as a marine nature reserve, the area of the Habibas archipelago is 2,684 hectares.
In 2005, the Habibas Islands were classified as a ASPIM Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Importance.
