54 years of Vaccination
The National Vaccination Program is one of the most successful public health programs in the history of independent Algeria. Thanks to vaccination, our country has been able to eradicate many communicable diseases and control others. This achievement was reinforced by the publication of the first presidential decree on June 17, 1969, making vaccination free and compulsory against certain communicable diseases of the time, after having generalized BCG vaccination in 1966.
Since then and over the past 54 years, this program has been subject to several adjustments and updates depending on the evolution of the epidemiological situation of communicable diseases in Algeria, and scientific advances in the field of vaccine development and production.
The main notable dates for these adjustments are:
• 1985: Introduction of the measles vaccine;
• 1997: Introduction of booster vaccines against measles, diphtheria, tetanus and poliomyelitis;
• 2000: Introduction of the vaccine against viral hepatitis B;
• 2007: Introduction of the Hemoephilus influenzae B (Hib) vaccine;
• 2014: Introduction of 4 new vaccines against: Rubella, mumps, pneumococcus and inactivated poliomyelitis;
• 2022: Combination of 6 antigens in the same vaccine – Introduction of the acellular pertussis vaccine
The stamp proposed on the occasion of the launch of the new national vaccination calendar, the implementation of which is scheduled for October 15, 2023, is symbolized by:
• Algeria which protects its children through vaccination symbolized by a mother’s hand;
• In the background, the sanctuary of the Martyr or Maqam Echahid;
• The slogan “54 years of vaccination” is linked to 54 years of vaccination activities since its institutionalization on June 17, 1969 making it compulsory.
