The national monetary unit “the Algerian Dinar (DA)” was established 60 years ago by Law No. 64-111 of April 10, 1964. To this end, the Central Bank of Algeria, duly authorized by the Algerian State, immediately proceeded to exercise its sovereign right to issue the national currency, through the creation of new bank notes denominated in Algerian dinar and the definition of the conditions for replacing old tickets within eight days (08) only.

Thus, the first series of Algerian banknotes, issued that same year, included four different denominations, namely the 5 DA, 10 DA, 50 DA and 100 DA notes. However, for metallic coins, seven denominations were issued: 1 DA, 50 centimes, 20 centimes, 10 centimes, 5 centimes, 2 centimes and 1 centime.

The circulation of these banknotes and coins made it possible to quickly substitute the Algerian dinar for the new franc and the franc bearing the words "Bank of Algeria" or "Bank of Algeria and Tunisia", which were commonly used even after the country's independence.
