50th anniversary of the Arab Parliamentary Union
The Arab Parliamentary Union, founded in June 1974, is an Arab organization representing the parliaments and councils of Arab countries, established to achieve the Arab solidarity that the nation experienced at that time. Algeria's hosting of the 36th session will coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of its founding.
This Parliamentary Union was created with the aim of consolidating Arab solidarity, debating issues of common interest for member states, developing recommendations and taking appropriate decisions, and coordinating the efforts of Arab parliaments within international forums.
The organs of the Union consist of the Conference which holds one session per year to debate the general issues of the member countries of the Presidency which is carried out in turn annually by each of the member countries of the Executive Committee which is composed of a representative of each Parliament, as well as the Standing Committees: "Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights", "Committee on Political Affairs and Parliamentary Relations", "Committee on Financial and Economic Affairs", "Committee on Social Affairs, Women, Children and youth” and the “Palestine Committee”.
Algeria has already hosted four conferences of the Union in the years 1981, 1991, 2000 (a session during which the President of the Republic gave a speech) and finally in 2005.
The design of this postage stamp embodies the slogan of the 36th Conference of the Arab Parliamentary Union.
