Marianne of Algiers
The Marianne of Algiers or Marianne of Fernez after the name of its designer Louis Fernez, is a series of commonly used stamps issued from 1944 in French Algeria, then in the liberated French territories.
This series is often joined to that of the “Rooster of Algiers” by Henry Razous which served to provide values not initially planned for the Marianne.
History
The issue of this stamp was decided in November 1942 by the French Committee for National Liberation (CFLN), in Algiers. The drawing was made by Louis Fernez and the necessary engravings made by Charles Hervé.
Printed subcontracted by the Typo-Litho Carbonnel company in Algiers, the stamp sheets were controlled by the Algiers printing company Heintz. The dated corners therefore bear the control date, and not the printing date as usual.
