African golden wolf (Canis lupaster)
The African golden wolf (Canis lupaster), formerly known as the Senegal jackal, is a species of carnivorous mammal in the Canidae family.
It is a canid endemic to the African continent, its presence today seems to be attested in North Africa, in the Sahelian strip, up to the Horn of Africa and part of East Africa. This is a canid adapted to desert areas that can be relatively common in grassy plains and steppes, even those characterized by an absence of water. In the Atlas Mountains in the Maghreb, the African Golden Wolf has been observed at an altitude of 1,800 m
The African golden wolf is a species of relatively general predatory meso-carnivore, targeting invertebrates and mammals up to the size of a gazelle fawn, although larger and/or heavier prey may occasionally be captured (sheep, goats, small antelopes, wild boars or warthogs).
