The Common Genet (Genetta genetta), is a species of carnivorous mammals in the family Viverridae. This is Genette in the strict sense. Morphologically close to the cat but with a more elongated body and a pointed snout, it is distinguished from other species of its genus Genetta by its gray coat spotted with black and its long ringed tail with a white tip.

Originally from Africa, it occupies a vast distribution area including the Maghreb, sub-Saharan Africa and part of the Arabian Peninsula. Introduced to Europe by humans, it is today well established in the Iberian Peninsula and in a large south-western half of France, where it continues to progress towards the north and east. A nocturnal and solitary animal, the genet is an agile predator, capable of climbing trees with ease. Its diet is mainly composed of small rodents, supplemented by birds, insects and some fruits. It is today a protected species in Europe, classified as Least Concern (LC) by the IUCN.
