For the benefit of the victims of the War
Fleeing the German invasion and the destruction caused by the bombings, the civilian populations of the North and then of Paris rushed in panic towards the South. On the roads invaded by refugees, a glass of water or a liter of gasoline is expensive; the strafing of the refugee columns by Stukas planes further adds to the confusion. In total, this May-June exodus will affect more than 6 million people, who will often find their homes looted upon their return.
