Louis XI (1423-1483) Creator of the State Post Office
It is to France and to Louis
It was also during the reign of King Louis XI that a Frenchman, Renouard de Vellayer, invented the mailbox. An experiment was attempted in Paris in 1653; but the boxes were plundered, filled with rubbish and mice which gnawed the letters when they did not devour them completely and this first attempt failed.
The history of the Post Office, however, probably finds its origins in the 'messengers of the ancient world', those who, by traveling on foot along uncertain routes, enabled the transport of information required by the growth of trade and commerce.
