The Mediterranean Games are due to the initiative and faith of a man, Hamid Tahir Pasha, who was a member of the International Olympic Committee and president of the Egyptian National Olympic Committee. Helped by men of good will from different countries in the Mediterranean Basin, Hamid Tahir Pasha succeeded in starting the first games in 1951, in Alexandria (Egypt).
Starting from Alexandria, under the sign of friendship and fraternity, the Mediterranean flame was transmitted, successively, to Barcelona (Spain) in 1955, to Beirut (Lebanon) in 1959, to Naples (Italy) in 1963 and to Tunis (Tunisia) in 1967.
Always faithful to the motto “Faster, higher, stronger”, the sporting youth of fifteen Mediterranean countries will meet once again in Izmir (Türkiye). When, in October 1971, the Turkish athlete took the traditional oath and promised to respect the laws that govern sport, the Mediterranean Games will celebrate their twentieth anniversary.
They will be dominated by the spirit that has always animated them: “Sport is for every man a source of internal improvement, not conditioned by the profession. It is the prerogative of all to the same degree without its absence being able to be made up for.
After participating for the first time, in 1967, in the Mediterranean Games in Tunis, Algeria will present a homogeneous and solid delegation in Izmir.
