The Arromanches, a light combat aircraft carrier, is the prototype of a series of nine Glory-class aircraft carriers.
Its construction began on June 1, 1942 at the Vickers-Armstrong shipyard (United Kingdom). Launched on September 30, 1943 and commissioned in December 1944, she was incorporated into the Royal Navy under the name Colossus.
The Colossus was leased to the French Navy in August 1946 for a period of five years. The French Navy renamed it Arromanches, intended to perpetuate the memory of the landing of June 1944, and purchased it in 1951.
