yours François, Duke of Choiseul (1719 - 1785)
Born in Lorraine on June 28, 1719, died in Paris in 1785, son of a grand chamberlain of Duke François de Lorraine, the Marquis de Stainville, grandson of Baron de Beaupré, governor of Santo Domingo, Choiseul undertook a military career.
Ambassador to Rome in 1753, he obtained an encyclical from the sovereign pontiff which put an end to the quarrel with the Jansenists (affair of confession notes and the refusal of the sacraments), then to Vienna in 1756 where he prepared the reversal of the alliances (Prussia became a common enemy country of France and Austria); as a reward for services rendered, the land of Stainville was made a duchy, the ambassador took the title of Duke of Choiseul in 1758.
