Around 1760, stagecoaches appeared in their final form.
These are monumental cars carrying 16 passengers and compartmentalized:
- at the front, the coupe with 3 luxury seats and allowing a view of the team and the road,
- in the center, the interior comprising 2 benches of 3 places each facing each other,
- at the rear, the rotunda which was entered through the 'end' of the car and which had 2 seats,
- finally the imperial with 3 seats still in full wind - but less expensive too - on the front part of the roof.
From the beginning of stagecoaches, the custom was adopted when going uphill, to bring down travelers in order to relieve the crew. When the climb was too steep, travelers were even asked to push on the wheels (except for those in 1st class).
The car we have just talked about was the normal type of stagecoach, the one which persisted until the appearance of the rail and which was popularized in imagery and prints from 1780 to 1830.
