The Orléansville Earthquake on the night of September 9 to 10, 1954.
An unprecedented cataclysm has just struck the Chéliff valley. The earthquake which completely destroyed Orléansville and devastated the surrounding centers took on the scale of a national catastrophe. 1,500 dead, several thousand injured, such is the tragic human toll of the earthquake. The material damage is considerable and amounts to hundreds of millions. Economically, the disaster is no less serious, as it affects tens of thousands of workers.

Rural Muslim populations have been particularly affected. Some douars were razed, and the generally large families who inhabited them were mercilessly decimated.
