Ruins and general view of Tipaza
Two thousand years of Tipaza
Located on the coast, at the foot of Mount Chenoua, at the end of the Sahel hills, Tipaza has the charm conferred by the proximity of the mountains and the sea. Well sheltered by Chenoua, this port town was an ideal site, chosen by the Phoenicians on the road to the Pillars of Hercules (Gibraltar), to establish one of their famous trading posts. The remains of the period demonstrate the importance of Tipaza which experienced remarkable growth under the reign of the Numidian sovereign Juba ll. Tipaza became an extension of Caesarea, and a true center of Greco-Latin Art and Culture was created there, where elements of Numidian culture also flourished.
