Annaba embroidery
On the eastern coast of Algeria, in Jijel and Annaba, there is embroidery on canvas which is similar, on the one hand, to the embroideries of the eastern Mediterranean basin (Syria, Balkans, etc.) and, on the other hand, to those of Salé (Morocco).
At the beginning of the 19th century, these embroideries were taught to little girls by master embroiderers. Methodically, on large pieces of silky canvas, 0.80 m wide by approximately 1.25 m long, divided widthwise into three or four strips, the student noted the motifs of the embroidery studied.
From simple line stitch patterns, we moved on to more difficult designs and the model ended with openwork rivers, sleeve ornament models and other motifs.
