Located in the west of the country, Tlemcen is a historic city and traditions. Surrounded by greenery and more than 800 m above sea level, stands the town of Tlemcen.
Tlemcen has kept many monuments from a prestigious and refined past, you will find the most beautiful mosques in Algeria:
• Great Almoravid mosque (15th century)
• Mosque of Sidi Bel Hassen (13th century), with a mirhab which rests on onyx columns.
In El-Eubbad, you can visit the mosque and the tomb built around Sidi Bou Mediene 'If you cannot find a spiritual master, go to the tomb of Abou-Medienne', they say in the Maghreb.
Boumedienne, famous Sufi, born in Seville in 1126, Abou Mediene, Choaib the Andalusian, or Sidi Boumediene, is considered the patron saint of Algeria. Initially a shepherd, this Spaniard went to Fez, then to Tlemcen, before reaching Mecca where he met the great mystic Abdelkader El-Gilani, of whom he became a fervent disciple.
He then settled in Bougie (Béjaia) from where his doctrine would spread throughout the Muslim West. He died in 1198, on the way to Marrakech, the Almohad capital. Buried in El-Eubbad, near Tlemcen, his tomb is a place of pilgrimage.
