History:
Formerly called 'Ikosim' (seagull island), its foundation dates back to the 4th century BC (remains of Campinian vases - dating from the 3rd century BC - were discovered in a well twenty meters deep).
- In the year 25 BC, the name of Ikosim was Hellenized into Icosium, and the city came under Roman domination.
- It was around the 4th century that Christianity was introduced to Icosium.
- In 429, the city came under Vandal domination. In 442 a treaty between Romans and Vandals allowed the Romans to recover Icosium during the hundred years that Vandal domination lasted.
- After 533, the city sank following attacks by Moorish and Berber tribes.
- In 702, sweeping wave of Islam from Arabia.
- In 960, Bologhine, son of Ziri-Ibn-Menad, rebuilt Icosium and named it 'El-Djazair-Mezghanna', El-Djazaïr (the islands).
- It was taken in 1082 by the Almoravids, the first large mosque of the Maliki rite 'Djamaa El Kébir' was built by Youssef-Ibn-Tachefin.
- In 1152, capture of El-Djazaîr by the Almohads (El-Mouwahidine).
