Marianne de Muller
In 1955, the French Minister of PTT “searched for a new symbol expressing the very soul of France”.
Following a competition between several artists, Gandon’s Marianne was replaced by the “Republic of Hope”.
It is the right profile of a young woman without a Phrygian cap crowned with the leaves and fruits of the oak. It is said that it symbolizes the ideal Republic: that of “peace, social progress and human progress”.
