Bird's Beak (Strelitzia reginae)
Bird's Beak (Strelitzia reginae)
Strelitzia reginae, the bird of paradise, is a plant whose very characteristic flower bears resemblance to the head of an exotic bird, hence the vernacular name of this plant. This plant forms clumps of several feet, approximately 1.50m in height.
Birds of paradise are commonly planted in subtropical and tropical gardens. These are plants indicated from zone 10, but can marginally be cultivated in zone 9b, since they will resist brief frosts of around -3°C.
Characteristics: The leaves of Strelitzia reginae, with a glaucous colored underside, are evergreen and measure approximately 45cm in length.
The flowers of the bird of paradise are very characteristic. The bracts, also called spathes, are green in color, with red traces. The flowers are orange in color, with a blue 'tongue'.
