National Solidarity Fund At the end of 132 years of colonization, which further impoverished the disadvantaged, and a socially and humanly devastating war of liberation, Algeria found itself destitute once independence was regained. Deprived of its own resources capable of allowing it to manage current affairs initially and to finance the reconstruction of the country and the revival of the economy subsequently, the Algerian State, through President Ahmed Ben Bella, then appealed to the solidarity of the people by launching a campaign to collect donations of money and valuables for the benefit of a National Solidarity Fund. Algerians, of all social conditions, educated or illiterate, living in the country or expatriates, have united hand in hand to help overcome misery, poverty and ignorance and open a window onto the developed world. The outpouring of generosity raised by this campaign is exceptional. Significant donations of money and jewelry were collected from the launch of this vast mutual aid movement. Everyone cultivates the feeling of having contributed, just a little, to the construction of this brand new nation. This National Solidarity Fund aims to support in particular the social categories most affected by the war as well as the families of the martyrs. In solidarity, they gave themselves the means to get back to work and cultivate the ear of wheat and the olive branch, symbols of work and the fight against famine and social poverty, thereby initiating the economic recovery of a country which only wants and can count on its own children. This campaign, unlike any other in terms of mobilization and commitment, could not better reflect the ancestral feeling of solidarity firmly anchored within all segments of the Algerian people.
